If your hair feels finer than it used to, your parting looks wider or you can see more scalp under the bathroom light, you are far from alone. Thinning hair in women is common, and it can happen at any age. The good news is that there are natural-looking, non-surgical options that work with your own hair, and you do not have to work it out by yourself.

Why does women's hair start to thin?

There is rarely one simple reason. Hair can thin gradually over time, or quite suddenly, and the pattern often gives a clue to what is behind it. Common factors include:

  • Hormonal changes, especially during perimenopause and the menopause
  • Female pattern hair loss, where hair thins across the top of the head and the parting widens
  • Stress, illness or a big life event, which can trigger a period of heavier shedding
  • Alopecia areata, which causes round or patchy areas of hair loss
  • Medical treatments such as chemotherapy

If your thinning started around the menopause, our guide to menopause hair loss and what can help goes into more detail.

Because the causes vary so much, it is always worth speaking to your GP or a trichologist if your hair loss is new, sudden or worrying. Our solutions are cosmetic, so they help your hair look and feel fuller, but they do not treat the underlying cause.

Your non-surgical options

When women first notice thinning, they often try volumising products, clever styling or clip-in pieces. These can help for a while, but many people tell us they end up spending every morning hiding the problem. Ready-made toppers and wigs are another option, although they can feel heavy, warm or simply not like you.

A tailored hair system is different. It is made for your hair and blended into it by a trained stylist, so the result looks like your own hair on a good day. At our salon in Biggleswade we offer two:

Mesh Hair Integration

Mesh Hair Integration suits women whose hair has thinned across the top or all over but who still have a good amount of their own hair. Your hair is drawn through a fine, breathable mesh holding human hair matched to your colour and texture, then cut and blended so there is no visible join. There is no glue and no clips.

Bespoke Skin Hair Toppers

A Bespoke Skin Hair Topper suits bald patches, alopecia, a thin crown or a parting that has become very sparse. It is made from a cast of your scalp, using the ICONIC SKINN™ system, with a thin, breathable polymer base and human hair injected to look like natural growth. It is applied with adhesive, with no shaving, beads or net.

The honest answer is that it depends on your hair, your scalp and how you live. That is why every one of our non-surgical hair loss solutions starts with a private conversation rather than a sales pitch.

Frequently asked questions

Is thinning hair in women normal?

Yes. Many women notice their hair becoming finer or their parting widening at some point, particularly around the menopause. It is common, but that does not make it any less upsetting. If it is new or sudden, speak to your GP or a trichologist first, then come and talk to us about how to restore the look of fuller hair.

Can thinning hair be covered without a wig?

Yes. Mesh Hair Integration and Bespoke Skin Hair Toppers both work with your own hair rather than replacing all of it. They are matched to your colour, texture and density, then cut and blended in, so they look like your hair rather than a wig.

Will a hair system damage my own hair?

Both systems are designed to sit comfortably alongside your own hair. Regular maintenance appointments and the right aftercare, including sulfate-free products and gentle brushing, help keep your own hair and scalp healthy. Jayne will explain exactly how to look after yours.

How much does a non-surgical hair loss solution cost?

The consultation is £10. Mesh Hair Integration and Bespoke Skin Hair Toppers are made to order, so each one is priced individually once we know exactly what your hair needs.
