Cutting and styling

From a classic reshape to a complete restyle, every cut begins with a conversation about how you wear your hair, how much time you spend on it, and what you actually want it to do. Our stylists work with your hair's natural texture and movement rather than fighting against it. Whether you want something low maintenance or something with more precision, the cut is tailored to you.

Hair colouring

From a full head of permanent colour to a gentle semi-permanent refresh, our colouring services cover everything from root touch-ups and grey coverage through to complete colour changes. Whether you want to go darker, richer, or simply bring life back to your natural shade, we work with your hair's condition and your skin tone to get the result right first time. If you are not sure what you want, a colour consultation is always the best place to start.

Blonde, highlights, and colour specialists

Blonde is a specialism in its own right, and we treat it as one. From cool ash and icy platinum to warm honey and buttery tones, getting blonde right means understanding undertones, managing lift carefully, and protecting the hair's integrity throughout the process. Whether you want a full head of highlights using foils for even, consistent lightness, or a more subtle, natural-looking result, we will recommend the right technique based on your hair type and the finish you are after. If you have been let down by patchy or brassy blonde work elsewhere, this is what we do.

Why clients choose The Vintage Avenue

Our 5-star rating with the Good Salon Guide is not something we applied for and hoped for the best. The Good Salon Guide assesses salons on everything from technical skill and hygiene standards to client experience and ongoing training. It is an independent mark of quality, and one we are proud to hold.

We have built our reputation in Biggleswade over more than twenty years, not through trends or gimmicks, but by doing the work properly and treating every client as an individual. We draw clients from across Bedfordshire and the surrounding towns, including Sandy, Stotfold, Arlesey, Letchworth, Hitchin, and Baldock. If you have not visited before, you are welcome to book a consultation first so we can talk through what you are looking for before committing to an appointment.

Balayage

Balayage is a freehand colouring technique that creates soft, graduated dimension through the hair. The result looks more natural and sun-kissed than traditional highlights because the colour is painted on by hand rather than placed in foils. It also grows out more gracefully, which means longer between appointments. We will talk you through whether balayage is the right fit for your hair, your colouring history, and the look you want to achieve.

Curly hair specialists

Curly hair needs a different approach, not just a different attitude. Our curly hair services are designed specifically for natural curls, coils, and waves. We cut curly hair dry, shape it according to how it naturally falls, and work with you on a routine that keeps your curls defined and healthy between appointments. Syd Cromarty leads our curly hair work and specialises in both curly cutting and bold, vibrant colour for textured hair.

Keratin smoothing

If you spend too long fighting frizz or battling unmanageable hair every morning, a keratin smoothing treatment can transform your routine. The treatment reduces frizz, adds shine, and cuts your styling time significantly. It works with your hair rather than stripping it, and the results last for months. We will talk you through exactly what to expect, how long it lasts, and how to look after it at home.

Conditioning treatments

Healthy hair holds colour better, styles more easily, and simply looks better. Our conditioning treatments are designed to repair damage, restore moisture, and strengthen hair from the inside out. Bridal styling

Your wedding day hair should feel like you, only better. We work with brides well in advance, starting with a trial appointment to find the right style and make sure it holds, moves, and photographs the way you want it to. On the day itself, we come to you or welcome you into the salon, whichever you prefer. We also work with bridal parties, so everyone is looked after.

Nano beads or tape: which extensions suit fine hair?

Both methods work beautifully on finer textures, but they suit different lifestyles. We compare discretion, maintenance, styling freedom and cost so you can choose with confidence.

What to expect from tape hair extensions

Tape extensions are one of our most requested services for a reason: fast fitting, comfortable wear, and smooth, even fullness from day one. Here is how they work, how we look after them, and what the investment looks like.

How a root tap makes your blonde look better

A root tap blends a slightly deeper tone at the roots for a seamless, lived-in finish that grows out gracefully. If you have ever wondered how some blondes look effortlessly polished, this is usually the reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book a consultation before my first appointment?
Not necessarily, but it is always an option. If you are booking a straightforward cut or blowdry, you can go ahead and book directly. If you are thinking about a colour change, extensions, or something you have not had done before, a consultation is a good idea. It gives us a chance to look at your hair, talk through what you want, and make sure we recommend the right service. Consultations are free and there is no obligation to book anything afterwards.
How much does a haircut cost at The Vintage Avenue?
A cut and blowdry starts from around £42 to £70 for a restyle. The exact price depends on the stylist and the complexity of the work involved. You can see our full pricing on our pricing page or call us on 01767 210210 and we will give you an accurate quote before you book.
How do I know which colour service is right for me?
That is exactly what we are here to help with. The short answer is it depends on what you want to achieve. If you want all-over coverage or a complete colour change, a full head colour is usually the right option. If you want dimension, movement, or lift without colouring every strand, highlights or balayage may suit you better. If you are not sure, book a colour consultation and we will talk you through the options based on your hair, your lifestyle, and how much maintenance you want to commit to.
Can you fix a bad colour from another salon?
Yes. Colour corrections are something we handle regularly. Whether you are dealing with banding, uneven tone, brassiness, or a result that simply was not what you asked for, we can assess the situation and put a plan together. Colour correction can sometimes take more than one appointment depending on what needs to be done, and we will always be honest with you about what is realistic and what it will cost before we start.
What is the difference between balayage and highlights?
Highlights use foils to lift consistent, even sections of hair. The result is a more uniform lightness throughout. Balayage is a freehand technique where colour is painted directly onto the hair, creating a softer, more graduated effect that looks natural and grows out gracefully. Highlights tend to need maintaining every six to eight weeks. Balayage can go longer between appointments, which suits people who prefer a lower-maintenance routine. We offer both and will recommend the right one based on the look you want and how your hair behaves.
Do you specialise in curly hair?
We do. Our curly hair services are designed specifically for natural curls, coils, and waves. We cut curly hair dry so we can see exactly how it falls and shape it accordingly, rather than cutting it wet and hoping for the best. Syd Cromarty leads our curly hair work and specialises in both curly cutting and vibrant colour for textured hair. If you have struggled to find a stylist who understands your curls, we would love to help.
How long will my appointment take?
It depends on the service. As a rough guide, a cut and blowdry is usually around 45 minutes to an hour. A full head of colour or highlights will typically take one and a half to two hours. Balayage and more complex colour work can take two to three hours. Bridal trials and extension fittings are longer again. When you book, we will confirm how much time to allow so you can plan your day around it.
Where are you based and is there parking nearby?
We are on Biggleswade High Street in Bedfordshire. There is pay and display parking on the High Street itself, and the main town car parks are a short walk away. If you are coming from Sandy, Stotfold, Arlesey, Letchworth, Hitchin, or Baldock, we are easy to reach and most clients find the drive is well worth it. Our address is 17C High Street, Biggleswade, SG18 0JA.
